Description of Practice

Connie Rakowsky helps individuals, families and groups resolve conflict successfully. Connie’s unique combination of 26 years of private commercial practice, 6 years of nonprofit management, and decades of mediation experience helps her guide parties to resolve a wide variety of matters.

Connie has served as a neutral in hundreds of matters in diverse areas with complex legal, financial and interpersonal issues. She is one of the few mediators with extensive bankruptcy, business, debt and nonprofit legal and mediation experience.

Her practice includes private matters as well as a mediator on the NH Superior, Probate and Business Courts and the Federal Court situated in NH. She is on a Maine Probate Panel and is seeking to join other Maine State Court panels in her newly adopted state. Connie serves on the American Arbitration Association's expedited Arbitration panel in the Northeast as well as that organization's Mediation Panel.

Professional Background

Connie practiced law at Orr & Reno beginning in 1981 with a diverse caseload, later focusing on bankruptcy reorganization, business and finance matters. She was fortunate to be involved in several large reorganization matters during that tenure and represented individuals, lenders and organizations, gaining a perspective from all sides. As counsel to many small businesses, Connie advised clients on many employment and real estate matters. For 26 years, Connie enjoyed a successful practice.

Connie managed the legal aid organization, Legal Advice and Referral Center, from 2009-2016, with funding, legal supervision, board management, federal financial grant management, accounting and audit supervisory responsibility and overall management of the small but mighty organization. She learned it's harder to follow management advice than to give it.

As an early adopter to ADR as a problem solver, Connie first became trained as a volunteer as early as the mid 1990's. She has been mediating part time ever since that time with full time attention after departing the nonprofit sector as an employee.

Connie has mediated more than 150 cases largely in the following areas:
*Bankruptcy: trustee actions, fraud, claims
*Commercial and Creditor: contract, dissolution, business generally, trade secrets, employment, franchise, utility, debt repayment, foreclosure, co-owner
*Nonprofit: Board matters, governance, compliance
*Probate: trust and will disputes, guardianship, accounting, fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, charitable trusts, spousal claims
*Real Estate: partition, quiet title, purchase and sales, family compounds

Connie graduated from Chicago-Kent Law School at the top of her class in 1981. She took a variety of entry level jobs at title insurance and mortgage companies following her graduation from Northwestern University in 1974 with honors.
